Why is it called Manassas, Virginia?

Do you know the origin of the name "Manassas?"

MANASSAS, Va. — Native American settlements first occupied the lands we now know as Manassas, Virginia.

Later European immigrants moved in and farmed the rich fertile land not far from the Occoquan River. The region was known as Tudor Hall after an early 19th century farm dwelling near the train stop, an important railroad junction connecting north, south and west. The station was later called Manassas Junction.

Many often ask why is the locale is called Manassas? The origins of the name Manassas are uncertain. Some say it comes from a Native American word “Manas” meaning island. Others say it was derived from Manasseh, an area peddler or inn keeper near the train junction, a Biblical name meaning "to bear" or "carry away."

Around 1825, a plantation house called Liberia was built. It was later used as headquarters by both Confederate and Union forces. In the war between the states, decisive events took place in this area, such as the first and second Battle of Manassas.

Manassas became the seat of government for growing Prince William County and grew to become its own city as a part of the Washington, D.C. suburbs.
