Man who stole car tried to flee from officers by taking DASH bus, police say

Mauricio Urquilla Escobar was caught trying to flee from officers on a DASH bus.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Alexandria Police have arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly stealing a car Thursday morning. Mauricio Urquilla Escobar was caught trying to flee from officers on a DASH bus.

At 7:44 a.m., officers responded to a report of car being stolen from the 5400 block of Richenbacher Avenue.

Just 45 minutes later, at 8:30 a.m., officers noticed the stolen car being driven on S. Reynolds Street and attempted to pull it over. The driver fled to a dead end near South Van Dorn and Duke Streets, where police say he abandoned the car and fled on foot.

While searching the nearby area, detectives determined the man has boarded a DASH bus. The bus he was riding was subsequently identified and located.

At 9:18 a.m., officers took the suspect into custody during a traffic stop on Seminary Road.

The Alexandria Police Department reminds the community to take safety precautions and asks drivers to keep their cars locked, always take their keys with them, and not leave their cars running and unattended.
