Police searching for person responsible for shooting, killing man in Stafford County

Deputies say the homicide suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — A homicide investigation is underway in Stafford County after an early Saturday shooting left one man dead.

Deputies with the Stafford County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of the 100 block of Deacon Road in Fredericksburg just after 12:20 a.m. for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, they found a 33-year-old man, from King George, Virginia, suffering from several gunshot wounds.

First aid was immediately performed by responding authorities, and he was taken to a hospital to be treated for serious injuries. The man was pronounced dead later Saturday morning. The homicide victim's name has not been released at this time.

Through an investigation, the sheriff's office was able to identify Darren Jamal Newman, 29, of Westmoreland County, as the suspect in the case. Newman is currently wanted for second degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

A dark-colored sedan, that is said to be involved in the homicide, has been located. Deputies say Newman should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information on Newman’s location is asked to contact the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office at 540-658-4400 or 911.

"Thank you to the deputies and Fire and Rescue personnel for their work to try and save the victim. Please keep the victim’s family in your thoughts and prayers," the sheriff's office said.
