Police: 21-year-old facing murder charges for alleged role in deadly Woodbridge shooting

Police say recent results of forensic evidence collected at the scene identified a person of interest believed to be involved in the shooting as the suspect.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A 21-year-old man is under arrest for his alleged role in a deadly Woodbridge shooting. Zaire Lee Davis, 21, was already in custody for his alleged involvement in a separate Father's Day shooting when he was charged on Thursday with murder, malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. 

Davis is accused of shooting and killing a 27-year-old man as well as injuring another man following a fight in the 13900 block of Richmond Highway in Woodbridge on Jan. 16, 2023. 

Forensic evidence collected at the scene and police investigation reveals that the suspect and victims were known to each other, and the shooting is the result of an ongoing dispute between the men.

On Jan. 25, 2024, following the investigation, detectives obtained arrest warrants for Davis, who was served while incarcerated in Fairfax County on unrelated charges. 

The events of that day are as follows:

On Jan. 16, 2023, officers responded to the 13900 block of Richmond Highway for a shooting. 

At the scene, officers found a 22-year-old man who had been shot. Fire and Rescue members responded and took the man to an area hospital for help where his injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening. 

Security officers from a nearby shopping center notified officers of a second man involved who had been shot multiple times. Officers provided first aid to the 27-year-old man until emergency personnel were able to get him to an area hospital where he died from his injuries. 

An initial investigation reveals that a group of people were in the 13900 block of Richmond Highway when gunshots were fired, striking the two men, While investigating the shooting, officers were told that at the time of the shooting, an occupied car that was driving on Richmond Hwy. near the above area and was also struck by gunfire.

No one else was injured, according to police.

A police K9 searched the area of the shooting, but no one else involved in the shooting was found.
