LOVETTSVILLE, Va. — Community members are being reminded to properly dispose of all combustible materials after a home burned down overnight in Lovettsville. The fire is estimated to have caused $680,000 in damages.
No occupants were displaced, as the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. There were also no reported injuries.
At 4:32 a.m. on Saturday, the Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center got a 911 call for a reported structure fire in the 13000 block of Orrison Road in Lovettsville. Loudoun County Fire and Rescue (LCFR) units from multiple counties responded to combat the flames. At the scene, crews found a two-story home with fire pushing through the second story and roof. It took firefighters around an hour to extinguish the flames.
An investigation by the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal's Office classified the fire as accidental, caused by the spontaneous combustion of construction materials. Investigators say specifically oil-soaked staining applicators consisting of rollers and brushes sparked the fire.
Community members are now being reminded of certain fire safety tips including how to dispose properly of all combustible materials. After using stain applicators, officials say they should be placed in a safe location outside, away from the structure to dry before discarding. Never pile rags, brushes, or rollers together, rather lay them flat on an exterior surface and allow them to completely dry.
