STERLING, Va. — Two homes in Sterling, Virginia were evacuated on Tuesday after a reported water main break.

At 4:40 p.m., Fire and Rescue units were sent to the 100 block of Magnolia Road for reports of "water coming from the road" and possibly flooding homes. Engine 611 arrived to find a torrent of water flowing down the street and through yards. Loudoun Water crews were then requested to respond to the break. Several more Fire and Rescue units also responded to investigate possible structural damage to homes in the area.

At 5:22 p.m., Loudoun Water crews arrived and gated the water flow back to stop the street and yards from flooding while keeping water service to the homes. A careful evaluation revealed that no homes were structurally damaged, and no families displaced.

Work to fix the broken water main is estimated to take three hours. During the repair work, one lane of Magnolia Road will be open for through traffic.  Additionally, Loudoun Water advised that residents will not be required to boil water.

Red Cross services were not needed because no families were displaced. Two homes did receive relatively minor water damage to their garage areas. The homeowners are working with Loudoun Water for repairs.
