Celebrate George Washington's birthday with free admission to his Mount Vernon home

Tickets will be distributed on-site at arrival, with a limited number being available.

MOUNT VERNON, Va. — Looking for a way to celebrate the Presidents Day holiday? George Washington's Mount Vernon is honoring the first president of the United States at his beloved home with free admission.

The free admissions is for both Presidents Day on Monday and George Washington's birthday on Thursday. Tickets will be distributed on-site at arrival, with a limited number being available.

The mansion tours are timed with tickets being distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Depending on the number of guests, there could be around a 2-3 hour delay between the arrival time and the mansion tour.

Here's a timeline of events for both free admission days:

  • Monday, Feb. 19: Presidents Day
    • 10 a.m.: The official presidential wreath-laying ceremony at George Washington’s Tomb.
    • 10:30 a.m.: Official Observance Ceremony of George Washington’s Birthday, followed by a special military demonstration on the bowling green.
    • 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Meet “Lady Washington” in the Interpretive Center.
    • 1 p.m.: Music of the Revolution on the bowling green.
    • 2:30 p.m.: Music of the Revolution on the bowling green.
    • 3-5 p.m.: Meet “Lady Washington” in the Interpretive Center.
    • All Day:
  • Thursday, Feb. 22: George Washington's birthday
    • 9:30-11 a.m.: Watch Half Crown Bakehouse make hoecakes (the General's favorite breakfast) on the 12-acre Field. They will be available for purchase after the demonstration.
    • 10:30 a.m.: Music of the Revolution on the bowling green.
    • 11 a.m.: Celebrate candidates from across the world as they become U.S. citizens during the Naturalization Ceremony in the Ford Orientation Center’s Smith Theater.
    • 1:30 p.m.: Celebrate Washington’s birthday with a free sample of cake in the Vaughan Lobby. While supplies last.
    • 2:30 p.m.: 
    • All Day:
      • Kids can create a birthday card for George Washington on the bowling green. (10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.)
      • Half Crown Bakehouse on the 12-acre field
      • Food Truck concessions on the 12-acre field (weather permitting)
