Firefighter welcomed back home from hospital after deadly Sterling house explosion

A dinner was held Monday night for family of the injured firefighters and other volunteers who've helped at the scene of the explosion since Friday.

STERLING, Va. — A firefighter is ready to recover at home after being released from the hospital on Monday.

The Loudoun First Responders Foundation said on Facebook Monday that Nancy Cortez was one of ten firefighters who were injured in an explosion at a home in Sterling, Virginia on Friday.

The explosion started as a call about the smell of gas at a home on Silver Ridge Drive on Feb. 16. Shortly upon arriving, firefighters discovered a 500-gallon underground propane tank on the side of the property was leaking. Roughly 40 minutes after arriving, the house exploded with firefighters inside.

A heartfelt video welcoming Cortez back home was posted to The Loudoun First Responders Foundation Facebook page and can be seen below:

A dinner was also held Monday night at a fire station in Loudoun County for family of the injured firefighters and other volunteers who've helped at the scene of the explosion since Friday. The dinner was private, and not open to the public.

According to the Loudoun County Board Chair Phyllis Randall, the widow of fallen Firefighter Trevor Brown has spoken to President Biden and Governor Youngkin since the deadly explosion occurred.

The Loudoun First Responders Foundation is paying for the funeral expenses of Trevor Brown.
