OAKTON, Va. — There are still questions surrounding a deadly shooting outside a Fairfax County home Wednesday evening. Police are still investigating the incident and have not released any new details as of Thursday evening.
It happened around 6 p.m. Wednesday. That's when officers responded to a report of a shooting at a home in the 11400 block of Waples Mill Road in Oakton, Virginia.
Fairfax County Police said it appears the homeowner acted in self-defense when he shot and killed a man who followed him into his home carrying a large rock. According to investigators, the homeowner went inside to get his gun after a fight in the front lawn. The homeowner's wife, two young children and another person were also inside at the time.
Next-door neighbor Harry Rosen said investigators were processing the scene all day Thursday. He didn't hear the shooting, but his wife did.
"My wife heard a gunshot. It's pretty shocking. We're pretty isolated," Rosen said. "My neighbor is a really big guy, very active, athletic and we knew he had a gun. Not many people in this neighborhood have guns."
Based on dispatch audio from OpenMHZ, the homeowner was hurt because the subject hit his shoulder and head with the rock. Another call said the young man approached the homeowner while he was working on his vehicle.
Rosen said he was scared for the kids who were in the house when it happened.
"I'm sure it was scary and I don't know if the kids saw it, which would be really frightening. That's the most frightening to me," Rosen said.
Les Wyatt, another neighbor in Oakton, said people have to protect themselves.
"I think it's appropriate what happened," Wyatt said. "It's really traumatic. Crime is coming."
Police still have not said what the fight in the front yard was about, who the man was, or why he was there.
