VIENNA, Va. — A bill that would bring a casino to Fairfax County, and has caused quite a stir, has been delayed for a year, according to Northern Virginia officials.
The Town of Vienna released a statement that after a local push to get the Virginia General Assembly to abandon the bill, which would authorize a casino for Tysons, the Virginia Senate Subcommittee on Resources voted 4-0 to carry it over to the 2025 legislative session. This will be done instead of advancing the bill to the full Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee.
The decision was made on Thursday at a meeting in Richmond, Virginia. Though the casino was slated for Tysons, Vienna decided to speak up as they believe it would have a detrimental effect on the entire region.
Vienna Mayor Linda Colbert said the opposition to the bill is one of the town council's top legislative priorities. Sen. Dave Marsden's (D-Burke) re-introduced legislation, SB-675, planned to put a referendum on a future ballot to authorize a casino for Tysons.
“We are grateful to the Vienna community for signing petitions and sending emails and letters to the Town Council and Virginia legislators opposing the casino,” Colbert said.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey McKay stated that it was the right thing for the Senate subcommittee to take a step back and understand all the details of the proposal.
"We only learned many of those details in dribbles as the bill was sorted out and after it was introduced, and we still do not have all of the information we need," McKay said. "The community deserves to know all the details of a major proposal like this, details such as what is actually included in the proposal, the proposed site, potential revenues, community impacts, traffic impacts, and more, before the General Assembly considers it.”
