Bald eagles lay their first egg on Valentine's Day in Loudoun County

Bald eagles usually lay their eggs three days apart, meaning that a second egg is anticipated for Saturday.

HERNDON, Va. — Valentine's Day is a day known for love, and for two eagles in Northern Virginia they were able to celebrate the holiday in a big way -- a new addition.

The Dulles Greenway Eagles announced that Rosa and Lewis laid their first egg at 5:31 p.m. Bald eagles usually lay their eggs three days apart, meaning that a second egg is anticipated for Saturday.

Lewis is a new addition to the nest as Martin, who was the male eagle for the nest for the past two years, was last seen on the cams on Dec. 1, 2023. "This was a very sad ordeal for our nest fans and volunteers," Dulles Greenway stated in a release.

Within a week of his disappearance, two male eagles moved in and started to fight over Rosa. Visitor #2 (V2) was the winner in the end, and last week he was named in honor of the late John Lewis.
