Drought warning issued for Northern Virginia

If things get worse, mandatory restrictions could go into effect.

VIRGINIA, USA — Residents living in the Northern Virginia or Shenandoah regions are being asked to limit their water use for the time being.

This request comes after the Department of Environmental Quality issued a drought warning advisory for those areas until further notice.

If conditions get worse, mandatory water restrictions could be put into place. As of now, no such restrictions are in effect.

Check out a few water-wise tips below you can follow to reduce your usage:

  • Check for leaks in faucets, toilets, hoses, etc. and repair promptly
  • Keep outdoor watering to a minimum. Avoid over irrigating grass, it’s normal for grass to go dormant in hot, dry weather
  • Turn off the water when brushing your teeth and shaving
  • Use the washing machine and dishwasher only when full
  • Take a shorter shower or fill the tub with less water

Utilities crews are working with regional partners and government agencies to monitor the situation and respond according to the Potomac River drought response plan.

The Potomac River is Leesburg’s water source and while lower than normal, is not at a declared drought stage per the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin.
