Woman caught speeding in Stafford County, sparking car chase by deputies

A deputy used a pursuit immobilization technique (PIT) to stop the speeding driver during the chase.

STAFFORD, Va. — A woman is facing multiple charges after leading deputies on a car chase in Stafford County late Tuesday night.

Just before midnight, a deputy with the Stafford County Sheriff's Office saw a Toyota RAV4 traveling 61 mph while in a posted 45 mph zone on Richmond Highway near Centreport Parkway in Stafford. He then attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the driver, but they refused to yield, which started a vehicle pursuit.

The chase continued northbound on Richmond Highway at speeds up to 63 mph. Other deputies also arrived in the area of Hospital Center Boulevard to assist.

The initial deputy that witnessed the speeding immobilized the driver by placing his front passenger quarter panel against the RAV4's side rear quarter panel. This maneuver caused the RAV4 to spin out, while two other officers moved in to seal off any escape routes.

The chase went on for around three miles, according to deputies.

The driver of the RAV4, identified as 45-year-old Deanna Dempsey, was taken into custody early Wednesday. According to the sheriff's office, she has been charged with eluding, DUI and possession of a controlled substance. Dempsey was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $2,500 bond.
