WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A dog owner is behind bars after police said he stabbed his own pit bull in the chest on Sunday night, the Prince William County Police Department said Wednesday.
Around 7:25 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to the County Center Crossing Apartments located in the 13000 block of Patamon Way in Woodbridge, Virginia to investigate an animal cruelty call.
According to investigators, the 1-year-old male pit bull began acting excitedly when a visitor entered the home. The dog apparently got more excited than the dog owner wanted, and he forcibly grabbed the pit bull by the neck.
This caused the dog to act aggressively toward the dog owner who then went into another room and retrieved a knife.
Investigators said the man came back and stabbed the dog in the chest area before the visitor was able to take the knife away from him.
The visitor attempted to provide first aid to the dog before contacting the police. The visitor was not injured in the incident.
The dog was taken to an area animal hospital where it is expected to recover, police said.
The dog owner, Robert Deneir Bumpus, 41, of Woodbridge, was arrested on felony animal cruelty charges. He's currently being held without bond.
No other information was immediately available.
