DALE CITY, Va. — A woman is dead after she was hit by a car and killed while walking her dog in Dale City early Thursday morning.

According to the Prince William County Police Department, the deadly collision happened on Mapledale Avenue near Miles Court shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Investigators say a 30-year-old man from Woodbridge was driving a 2020 Nissan Versa when, for some reason, he drove onto the sidewalk and hit 57-year-old Maria Isabel Cardozo, from Woodbridge.

Cardozo, who was walking her dog when she was struck, died from her injuries. Her dog ran away and was later found near her home uninjured.

The man driving the car did stop after hitting Cardozo and was not hurt. Drugs and alcohol are not a factor in the crash, according to officers.
