WASHINGTON — The Washington Commanders will honor the lives of three Virginia players by wearing a set of helmet decals during this Sunday's game against the Houston Texans.
Virginia wide receivers Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler and linebacker D'Sean Perry were killed in a Sunday night shooting after returning to Charlottesville, Virginia, from a group field trip to see a play in Washington D.C.
University Laboratory School grad and Cavaliers running back Mike Hollins was seriously wounded in the shooting but has been recovering.
The University of Virginia canceled its home football game against Coastal Carolina University as the community reeled from the deadly shooting on campus grounds.
The Commanders will take the field in Houston on Sunday, the team's helmets will have the numbers 1, 15, and 41, which were worn by Davis, Chandler, and Perry. "Our hearts are with @UVAFootball and the UVA community affected by the tragedy," the football team wrote in a statement on Twitter.
The University of Virginia held a memorial service Saturday to honor Davis, Chandler, and Perry. The families of the three slain football players were in attendance, as well as the loved ones of the two surviving students that were also shot on the bus.
