MONTCLAIR, Va. — Two people are receiving help from the American Red Cross after being displaced from their home due to a fire Sunday night.
According to Prince William County Fire and Rescue, crews were called to the 15200 block of Larkspur Lane in Montclair for reports of a house fire shortly before 11:45 p.m.
Crews learned on the way to the home that a candle had ignited a mattress in the home. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke on the second floor and two people who had gotten out of the home safely.
The fire was put out and no injuries were reported, but the damage forced the Building Official to declare the structure unsafe to occupy. The two occupants are getting help from the Red Cross.
The Fire Marshal's Office determined the fire was started when a candle fell onto a mattress.
Fire Marshal officials warn against using candles but if used, special precautions should be taken, including not leaving burning candles unattended, never positioning a candle where it can be knocked over, and keeping the candle away from any combustible material.
