PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Crews are keeping an eye on a brush fire that forced the closure of Route 1 in Prince William County Wednesday afternoon.
The fire was first reported around 5 p.m. in the area of Joplin Road and Russell Road. Crews were called to the area to bring the fire under control, and were forced to close the road in both directions to battle the blaze.
By 9:20 p.m., all lanes reopened for travel in the Quantico area, near the Prince William County and Stafford County line.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the following roads were impacted during the closure:
- Route 1 southbound at the Route 619 (Joplin Road) intersection in Prince William County.
- Route 1 northbound at the Corporate Drive intersection in Stafford County.
Prince William County Fire and Rescue told WUSA9 that they dealt with multiple fires in their region throughout the day. All of them, we're told, are under control.
In a Thursday morning update, Prince William County Fire Department reported no active fires in the county. Crews will be in the area of Route one, extinguishing hot spots for what's been dubbed the Locust Shade fire.

"The area involved can be described as heavily wooded with deep ground cover making it extremely difficult to fully extinguish. Smoke and the smell of smoke will most likely linger in the area for some time. There is no threat to any structures or residents in the area," a spokesperson for the fire department said Thursday.
Crews expect weather conditions to be better Thursday with less wind, helping to fully extinguish the blaze.
