A 5-month-old Landsdowne baby has died after he and his mother were hit by an SUV Wednesday morning. His mother is serious condition.
"I saw the mom screaming. She didn't move. She was hurt. I know she was hurt she didn't move,” one witness said. “The baby was thrown feet away from her.”
It was a horrific scene. The stroller was left in pieces. The mother and child laid motionless on the ground.
"The baby didn't move. He was motionless, he was like, so still,” the witness said.
The mother and baby were crossing Riverside Parkway at Coton Manor Drive heading to Kipheart Drive just after 8 a.m. They were past the median in the middle of the four-lane road in a well-marked cross walk when they were hit. A Jeep Grand Cherokee, traveling in same direction made a left turn and hit them.
Both the mother and child were rushed to the nearest hospital, where the baby later died.
"I'm am in utter shock. I cannot be live that with the crosswalk and everything else that something like this would happen. It's devastating. My heart goes out to the family," said a neighborhood dog walker, Libby Dowell.
The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office seized the Jeep to investigate. And they served the driver with a search warrant. Late in the afternoon he turned over two cell phones.
"I don't see how someone can do that. It's well-marked, it was school time. I don't know where the driver was," said resident Matthew Broderick.
The driver of the Grand Cherokee has not been charged at this point. The mother is expected to survive her injuries.
Several high school and middle school students saw the crash, or the aftermath of it, on their way to school. The Loudoun County school system is providing counselors to any student or family who needs them.
