FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — After reports about a man walking near the tracks in Fredericksburg, Va., law enforcement said Sunday that he had been hit and killed by an Amtrak train.
The deadly accident happened at around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday just after a 911 dispatcher got a call about the man, according to Fredericksburg P.D.
Amtrak police and an on-call detective were also at the scene.
Fredericksburg Police Department said Sunday afternoon that they had identified the man who was killed and reached out to his family members.
Police kept their statement short as the investigation was expected to continue.
"The investigation is ongoing," Fredericksburg P.D. said. "... no further information will be released at this time."
About 1,000 people were killed in "railroad deaths" last year, according to the non profit National Safety Council.
