ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Students and parents who attend Alexandria Public Schools say they want weapons detector systems inside school buildings permanently. Alexandria City Public Schools shared the results of a survey with school board members at a meeting Thursday.
About 1,800 people responded to last month's community survey. The majority of people who responded were students who said the scanners make them feel safer.
The pilot program for the detectors has been in place in all middle and high schools in Alexandria since last year. Since then, ACPS says there has been a 71% drop in weapons-related incidents. However, staff did not recommend expanding the program to elementary schools.
The school board is set to vote on making the weapons detectors permanent on June 6.
