Experimental homebuilt aircraft crash leaves one dead in Culpeper County

The pilot was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified as Grover C McCall Jr., 66, of Alexandria, according to Virginia State Police.

CULPEPER COUNTY, Va. — A homebuilt experimental aircraft crashed and left one person dead in Culpeper County Friday afternoon, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Virginia State Police responded to the scene of a small, private aircraft crash shortly before 2:45 p.m. in the 13000 block of Spillman Road. Reportedly, the pilot was the only occupant of the aircraft and they died at the scene of the crash. The pilot has since been identified as Grover C McCall Jr., 66, of Alexandria. 

The NTSB said an M-Squared Breese 2 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff a mile and a half south of Culpeper Regional Airport. 

The cause of the crash is under investigation. A preliminary report is expected to be released within 30 days of the crash. 

The NTSB asks anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at witness@ntsb.gov
