2 adults, child hit by train and killed while walking on tracks in Springfield

Investigators are still working to figure out exactly what happened.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. — Police are investigating after three people, including a child, were killed when a train hit them Wednesday night.

According to a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, by the Fairfax County Police Department, the train crash happened at Accotink Park Road.

Initially police said an adult and two children were struck and killed. On Thursday, investigators corrected that information to say two adults and one child were killed.

Police claim the three were walking on the train tracks when they were hit. All three of the victims were declared dead after the crash.  Police say the crash happened on a bridge, and believe the man was hit by the train, while the woman and child fell from the bridge.

The adults were identified as Diego Arriaza, 28, of Annandale and Yeraldin Pardo, 28, of Lincolnia. The child was believed to be Pardo's 8-year-old son.

It is not believed that alcohol or speed were factors in the crash for the train engineer. The investigation is still underway.

Norfolk Southern confirmed to WUSA9 that their train was involved in the crash, which happened shortly before 8:30 p.m.
