Housekeeper finds 3 people dead in Fairfax Co. home

Police believe a husband shot and killed his wife and her brother before he died by suicide.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Police are investigating after three people were found shot dead inside a home in Fairfax County in what they believe was a double murder-suicide.

Officers were called to a home in the 8500 block of Wild Spruce Drive in Springfield Thursday afternoon just after 3:45 p.m. A housekeeper found three bodies in the basement and called 911.

"When officers arrived they responded to the basement and encountered two adult men and one adult female, all with apparent gunshot wounds," Deputy Chief Eli Cory said.

A gun was found in the basement near the three bodies.

On Friday, police identified the deceased as Meskerem Belachew Solomon, 38, Amanuel Belachew Solomon, 31, and Tiku Berhane Gebreeyesus, 47. Initial investigation leads police to believe Gebreeyesus shot his wife, Meskerem Belachew Solomon and her brother Amanuel Belachew Solomon before shooting himself.

Cory said investigators are still working to understand what lead up to the shootings. The medical examiner will complete autopsies to determine the official manner and cause of death.

A 2-year-old was also in the home, but uninjured. Sky9 captured the moments officers brought the toddler out of the home.

Two more children who live at the home were not there when the shooting happened. Police said all three children are with the nanny and family friends.

Neighbors hugged and cried together, in disbelief about what happened.

"It's just devastating you don't think that these things are going to hit this close to home," said Mimi Birrenkott, who lives nearby.

Police say there were no signs of forced entry at the home and there appears to be no threat to the public at this time.

Police say officers had been called to the home before but not in several years and the past reports do not appear to be related.

Thursday night, Cory confirmed that there was a gap in time between when the housekeeper told them she heard the gunshots and when she called 911.

"We're working to determine what that delay was and why," said Cory.
