1 person injured in Fairfax County shooting; 14-year-old arrested

Detectives stated that they believed the shooting was not a random act.

HYBLA VALLEY, Va. — A 14-year-old has been arrested for a shooting that left a man injured Saturday evening, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Officers responded just a few minutes after 5 p.m. to Vernon Square Drive, Richmond Highway, in Hybla Valley after receiving a report of a person being shot. Upon arrival, a 19-year-old was found suffering from gunshot wounds to the arm and lower body. Police say he was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries, but is expected to be OK.

Through an initial investigation, it was determined that the 19-year-old was walking to a nearby apartment when he was approached by the teen, who displayed a gun and shot him. A nearby home was also struck by one round, but no one was injured.

The suspect then ran away from the area. Officers, K9, and their helicopter searched the area, but the suspect was not located. Detectives also stated that they believed the shooting was not a random act.

Officers were able to identify the suspect and his mother was contacted, but he was not home when officers arrived. Later that evening, the mother brought the 14-year-old into the Mount Vernon Police Station.

The 14-year-old was charged with malicious wounding and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The juvenile is being held at the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center.

Police say the firearm was not recovered.
