ALEXANDRIA, Va. — No one won the jackpot in the Powerball drawing, but some lucky few are walking away with $1 million, including someone who bought a ticket in Alexandria for the Monday night drawing.
Could you be the lucky person? Well, if you bought your ticket from the Safeway located at 8646 Richmond Highway you are already in the running.
The winning numbers for the April 1 Powerball drawing were 19-24-40-42-56, and the Powerball number was 23. This ticket matched the first five numbers and missed only the Powerball number.
The winning ticket from Northern Virginia is one of only six in the nation to match the first five numbers. No tickets matched all six numbers which would have resulted in an estimated win of $1 billion. This means the jackpot for Wednesday's Powerball drawing is growing near an estimated $1.09 billion.
But as for the winning ticket, the person has 180 days from the drawing date to claim the prize.
The Virginia Lottery is advising the winner, before doing anything else, to sign the back of the ticket to establish ownership. The winner should contact Virginia Lottery when they are ready to claim their prize.
Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. The odds of matching all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, according to lottery officials. The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25.
