MOUNT VERNON, Va. (WUSA9) -- Fairfax County Police are investigating a triple shooting in Mount Vernon that has left one man dead and two others in the hospital.
The shooting happened late Wednesday night in the apartments off of Audubon Avenue, near Route 1. Police are still searching for those responsible and a motive.
When Fairfax County Police arrived at the apartment complex, they found two victims. Both men were taken to the hospital, but one was pronounced dead shortly after. Then, a third victim showed up at the hospital on his own.
The deceased victim was identified as Marquel Davis, 22, of Audubon Avenue in Alexandra. The Office of the Medical Examiner will determined the cause of death.
"We heard the gunshots last night and I'm not really used to stuff like that," remembers Tja Wright, who lives above where the shooting took place. Tja and her husband say they woke up to about a dozen gunshots coming from the apartment above. "Probably two minutes after we heard the gun shots there were police all around here looking for answers," says Wright.
The Wrights weren't alone, several other neighbors gathered outside wondering what was happening, including Rosa Garcia. "I couldn't get home until this morning everything was blocked off," says Garcia. Not only could she not go home, she couldn't get to her children. "My son was freaking out he called me when I was walking here and he called me freaking out, he was like, 'mom there's police everywhere," remembers Garcia.
Fairfax County Police say the shooting started with a dispute inside the apartment and at this point they don't believe there's any public threat to the community. Still, this isn't the first time they've responded to this neighborhood for a shooting. "Yeah I heard about a month ago," says Wright. "Somebody else was shot in that same apartment."
An upsetting trend for those who call this home. "I pretty much grew up in this area," says Wright. "It's sad, it's kind of scary."
Some say the crime is forcing them to make a difficult decision. "Move, definitely. It's not the first incident around here and like I said it was right next to our apartment. Right next to our building," says Garcia.
Far too close to her home and her children.
Police say the two who survived are 21-years-old and 27-years-old. Their names have not been released.
Police say charges are pending in the investigation but ask that anyone with information give them a call: 1-866-411-TIPS, by visiting www.FairfaxCrimeSolvers.org or by texting TIP187 plus your message to CRIMES (274637).
