Some people are even trying to spread holiday cheer at the airport, by giving gifts to Transportation Security Administration officers working without pay.

One person tweeted out a photo of five VISA gift cards he planned to give out to TSA agents. Others are asking whether it's legal.

Our team of researchers looked up the rules governing government employee conduct.

Generally, federal workers cannot accept gifts, but there are a few exceptions--like non-cash gifts under 20 bucks.

Even with limited exceptions, government employees are encouraged to decline gifts, that are otherwise permissible.

When we asked the TSA directly, they said thanks, but no thanks: officers are not allowed to accept cash, gift cards, or gifts at screening locations, because doing so could distract them from their security mission or create the appearance of favoritism.

More people are asking if they can send agents home with fresh cookies or snacks. TSA confirmed agents CAN'T accept cookies, candy canes, or any other holiday leftover.

So we can Verify, leave it at the door, TSA agents can't accept your gifts. Dropping them a "Thank You" will do just fine.
