STERLING, Va. (WUSA9) -- Just days before his winning $1 million Powerball ticket was going to expire, a Virginia man claimed his prize.

Aaron Monsey has known about his winning ticket for months, but says he was in no hurry to get his money. He purchased the ticket, which matched the first five numbers and only missed the Powerball, on June 21.The next day, Monsey discovered that he had won.

Why did he wait so long to come forward? "Just because…"

On December 15, Monsey returned to the Sterling Park Exxon (formerly Getty Mart) to receive his check from the Virginia Lottery. The store also got a check for $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Monsey, who works as a carpenter, used Easy Pick, letting the computer randomly select the numbers on his ticket. If he'd matched all six numbers, he would have won a jackpot estimated at $60 million.

By law, winning tickets in Virginia expire 180 days after the drawing. That means this ticket would have become worthless at the close of business on Thursday, December 18.
