Man in custody after Southeast DC standoff

The man was taken into custody just after noon, police said, and all roads reopened by 3 p.m.

WASHINGTON — A man is in custody after he barricaded himself inside an apartment building in Southeast D.C. for several hours Monday morning. The standoff prompted a large police presence and road closures.

Details about the standoff are scarce. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department said officers were responding to a domestic call in the 2800 block of Q Street Southeast around 10:30 a.m., near Randle Highlands Elementary School. Once on scene, the man refused to come out of his apartment, and police called for backup. The man was alone inside the apartment.

Just after noon, police said the man was in custody and no injuries were reported.

Several blocks of Q Street, 28th Place, and 29th Street in Southeast were closed for hours while police were on scene.

By 3 p.m., police said the barricade had ended and all roads reopened.

Police have since identified the man as 51-year-old Aaron Johnson, of Southeast, D.C. Investigators say Johnson struck a woman with a rock before barricading himself inside a residence. A DC Fire and EMS Arson Investigator responded to the scene and determined that the suspect had attempted to start a fire with a heat source while inside the residence.

He has been charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Rock), Threats, and Malicious Burning.
