Moments after Thursday's explosion at the Flower Branch Apartments in Silver Spring, neighbors rushed to help those trapped by smoke and fire.
"Women were grabbing children and rushing to them to safety, " said Encarncion Montes said in Spanish.
Children and adults escaped from smoke filled windows. Emergency personnel and neighbors were on the ground doing their part.
Montes was able to help three children get to safety after the explosion. Officials say at least five people are still missing, 30 injured and 90 residents have been displaced.
While county officials as well as the NTSB work to determine a cause, Montes says he's comforted knowing the community came together when it really mattered.
"We're a united community. We're all of us in this great tragedy he says.
