SILVER SPRING, Md. (WUSA9) --

A school crossing guard was hospitalized after being struck by a car in Maryland on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in front of the Galway Elementary School in Silver Spring, Montgomery County Police said.

The guard was wearing her uniform and safety vest and standing in a crosswalk directing traffic when she was struck by a Ford Windstar, police said.

It was raining at the time of the incident and the driver of the vehicle told authorities that his windshield wipers weren't working properly, preventing him from seeing the crossing guard before he struck her, police said.

The driver has been identified as Brice Huff, of Berlin, Maryland. Huff was issued citations for failing to exercise due care to avoid pedestrian collision, failure to equip a vehicle with required windshield wiper controls, negligent driving, and failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The crossing guard has been identified as Rosetta Parisi of Silver Spring. Parisi has been a substitute crossing guard for the Police Department for 12 and a half years, police said.
