Maryland man convicted after being hit by car moments after committing a bus robbery

Officers found the suspect, Zachary Moko, in the hospital as he was being treated for his injuries from the car accident.

WASHINGTON — A Montgomery County man, who was hit by a car moments after committing a robbery, now faces up to 15 years in jail.

A jury convicted Zachary Moko, 19, of Olney, Tuesday afternoon, in connection to a robbery that occurred on a Ride-On bus.

High-definition video on the bus showed Moko stealing $700 in cash and Louis Vitton glasses, worth $650, from another passenger on April 13, 2018.

Court documents claimed Moko had been playing a money guessing game with the victim before the two men began to fight.

"We were able to obtain a conviction, largely, because of these high quality cameras on the Ride-On bus," said Ramon Korionoff, a spokesperson for the Montgomery County State's Attorney.

The video also showed that Moko punched the victim before the bus came to a halt near the corner of East Gude and Taft Street in Rockville. The victim pulled Moko's shirt off in the scuffle around that same time. Authorities were able to collect Moko's DNA from that item.

Officials say Moko then ran off the bus as the victim chased him. A car then accidentally hit Moko before driving away from the scene.

"It looked like a stuntman [scene] out of Hollywood," Korionoff said.

Moko was able to run away from the victim. But, court documents say he soon began to suffer from head injuries after the car accident.

Korionoff said Moko slipped in-and-out of consciousness for two days before his family decided to take him to receive medical care.

Montgomery County Police eventually discovered Moko at a local hospital.

Moko will be sentenced on May 9. Police said he has a past criminal record.
