MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett says he has got a plan that would help reduce traffic and get people to work fast.
It's called the bus rapid transit system. Leggett said Wednesday that he will propose $11.5 million in county funds to plan a bus rapid transit system to help reduce traffic in the area and help people get to work in the heavily congested area.
According to Montgomery County the average commute in the area is over 35 minutes. Commute times are expected to increase by 70 percent by 2040.
Leggett plans to call on county officials to continue the funding of the project.
The bus rapid transit system would use mostly bus only lanes to provide more frequent service. The buses will carry 65-100 passengers at a time and will run along an 80-mile route in Montgomery County.
The ultimate goal is to reduce congestion along Rockville Pike and Route 29 Corridors.
