WASHINGTON – A man escaping from police in a stolen van hit and killed a man riding his bike on Florida Avenue NE Friday morning, according to police.

Metro PD said in a statement officers spotted the suspect, Robert Earl Little, Jr., 25, near Benning Road and Florida Avenue NE when they tried to stop him. They said he refused to stop and drove away, before getting into a crash at the intersection of 12th Street and Florida Avenue.

Preliminary investigation revealed the driver did not stop at a red light, hit another car, then crossed the double yellow lines to crash into the cyclist, police said. He then crashed into a tree.

Police said the man killed on the bike was identified as 54-year-old David Salovesh of Northeast D.C. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police arrested Little at the scene, and emergency responders took the suspect to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Little faces second degree murder charges as well as unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
