WASHINGTON, (WUSA9) -- The artist behind many of the Washington National Cathedral's stained glass windows died Wednesday, a Cathedral spokesperson said.
Rowan LeCompte crafted 45 of the 231 colorful windows at the Cathedral.
"Everyone who has found inspiration in the grand stained glass windows of Washington National Cathedral and the great stories they tell has been blessed by the life of Rowan LeCompte," said Rev. Gary Hall, dean of the Washington National Cathedral, in a statement.
LeCompte was 16 when he was commissioned for his first stained glass window at the Cathedral.
The artist gave a lecture at the Cathedral in 2001, during which he called the cathedral "a magic place, filled with a degree of awesomeness and beauty and spirit."
