BELTSVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- The mother of a baby girl who was abandoned in Prince George's County on Wednesday, has been identified, police said. They have not released the name of the woman yet.
Prince George's County police are getting offers from people who want to adopt a newborn girl who was abandoned close to a home in Beltsville, Md. on Wednesday.
The little girl was found outside on Wednesday around 11:45 a.m. close to a home on Shoal Creek Terrace.
A neighbor heard the baby crying and then called the police.
"I walked out to my back porch and heard a baby crying. Normally people walk their babies around the neighborhood. It's a nice development. When I heard it again and closer I stepped on my back porch to see what it was and I saw a baby," said Khiani Jackson.
Maryland has a safe haven law, which allows a mom to leave a baby up to 10 days old at a fire station, police station or hospital without fear of being prosecuted. But this baby girl was left in a backyard.
"And they don't have to resort to abandoning a child in a area where they're vulnerable to the conditions of the weather, to people that are not aware that they're there, wild animals. We don't want to see any child or any person placed in a situation like that," said Cpl. Nate Lewis.
The baby is now being cared for in a local hospital and appears to be in good health, said police on Wednesday.
Police believe the baby was born just hours before she was found.
Police report they are getting offers from people looking to adopt or foster the child, but they first need to speak with the baby's parents to decide whether or not to put her in the custody of social services.
The Department of Social Services says they have lots of children who need foster or adoptive parents, and anyone who is interested should 301-909-2300.
