WASHINGTON — A suspect is on the run Friday after police canceled an Amber Alert for a 14-year-old girl who was forced into a vehicle in Southeast D.C. on Thursday night.
The girl has been found safe and unharmed, but police say the suspect has not been caught.
Just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to the 1300 block of Longfellow Street Northwest for a report of a fight. When they arrived in the area, the police department said their officers saw a black SUV and a gray sedan in the middle of the street with open doors and at least three people nearby.
When officers approached the drivers, both vehicles fled. The SUV was caught on surveillance video striking multiple vehicles during its escape ─ including a marked DC Police vehicle.
Officers were told by witnesses that a 14-year-old girl was seen being forced into one of the vehicles, and an Amber Alert was declared just before 5 a.m. Friday.
Just after 1 p.m. Friday, officers investigating the Amber Alert spotted the girl with a masked man leaving a home in the 700 block of 31st Street Southeast. The two got into a car and fled the scene, while officers chased after them.
The police pursuit ended in a crash in the 4200 block of Southern Avenue Southeast, at the border of D.C. and Prince George's County, Maryland.
The male driver fled the scene of the crash, but officers were able to make contact with the girl. Police say she was unharmed in the crash, but was taken to an area hospital as a precaution.
The driver is still being sought by police. He was spotted on a surveillance camera and police released the images Friday afternoon.
Anyone who knows where to find the man scene in the photos should contact police.
No other information has been released.
