Missing toddler dies after being found in neighborhood pool in Rockville

No foul play is suspected but detectives with the Major Crimes Unit is investigating what happened.

ROCKVILLE, Md. — Police are investigating after a 3-year-old was found dead in a neighborhood pool over the weekend in Rockville.

According to the Montgomery County Department of Police, the county's emergency communications center received reports about a missing child just before 11:45 p.m. on Friday.

Detectives later responded to Elmcroft Court, where the unidentified boy was found in a neighborhood pool. First responders with the Rockville City Police gave the boy CPR and he was taken to an area hospital where hospital staff declared him dead.

No foul play is suspected but detectives with the Major Crimes Unit is investigating what happened.

Due to the child's age, their identity will not be released.

The American Red Cross has several tips to create a safe home pool.

  • Completely surround your pool with four-sided isolation fencing with a self-closing and self-latching gate that is out of the reach of a child.
  • A four-sided isolation fence (separating the pool area from the house and yard) reduces a child’s risk of drowning 83% compared to three-sided property-line fencing.
  • For above-ground pools, secure, lock or remove steps, ladders and anything that can be used for access (such as outdoor furniture and toys) whenever the pool is not being actively supervised by an adult.
  • Install a secondary barrier, such as:
    • Door alarms and locks that are out of the reach of a child on all doors and windows with direct access to the pool or spa area
    • Lockable covers
