McLean High School band recognized for award-winning season

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors formally recognized the McLean Band program for its award-winning season.

At the board's Dec. 6th meeting, supervisors approved a certificate of recognition praising the high school students for their many achievements.

The McLean Marching Highlander won the 2016 US Bands State Championship this year with its exciting show, "Story of My Life."

"You make us proud everyday whether you're winning state championships or just being great," said Supervisor John Foust who said the "Story of My Life" performance look computer-generated it was so "perfect."

Band Director Chris Weise said it was "humbling" and "really cool" that county leaders take time to recognize the students' hard work.

"Marching band, and I think music in general, is an activity that pushes students to be better today than they were yesterday....as musicians, as marchers, as citizens in McLean, as friends in support of each other," said Weise.

McLean's Symphonic Band was also praised for its concert in November before the Virginia Music Educators Association. Only the best bands with the highest marks are invited to play.

McLean's band program has seven ensembles with more than 240 students.

At the Supervisor's meeting, the Chamber Ensemble performed two pieces and then 100-plus students packed into the well of auditorium and posed for pictures with the Board.
