WALDORF, Md. — A woman is facing charges after allegedly lifting a 7-year-old over her head and throwing the child down onto asphalt.

According to the Charles County Sheriff's Office, officers were called to an urgent care facility in Waldorf after hearing about a woman in the parking lot assaulting her child just before 8 a.m. Monday.

Witnesses told officers the woman picked up her child and lifted them over her head before she "slammed" the child onto the asphalt. Those witnesses grabbed the child and put them in their car to keep them safe until officers arrived.

Upon arrival, officers say the woman was combative, but they were able to de-escalate the situation. Another officer checked on the child, who was taken to an area hospital with severe head trauma.

While the woman was arrested, she reportedly bit three officers. She was eventually subdued and taken to an area hospital where she was medically cleared. She has been charged with first-degree child abuse causing serious physical injuries, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office is choosing to not reveal the woman's name to protect the identity of the child.

If someone you know is dealing with child abuse, there is help available through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's CyberTipline at 800-843-5678. The hotline is available 24 hours a day.
