BETHESDA, Md. — An electrical issue in a 15-story apartment building in Bethesda that caused smoke on multiple floors led to the building being totally condemned, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue said.
On Saturday, there was a large response from the fire department at Westwood Tower Apartments – located on Westbard Avenue across the street from the Giant grocery story.
There was an electrical issue which caused power outages across part of the building, including the elevators, and smoke to filled multiple floors.
On Sunday, the fire department said the electrical issue was still being worked on, but they later said that every apartment in the building was declared "condemned" by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Affairs.
The total evacuation of the building began at 6 p.m. on Sunday, and the fire department said all residents were out of the building. The fire department added that repairs to the building began immediately.
No other details have been released.
