Slow down! Turtles are on the move in our area in case you haven't noticed.
If you've seen a turtle or two try and cross the road lately you aren't alone.
It's breeding and nesting season for the Eastern box turtles and they are out and about in Montgomery Park areas, park officials say. You may also see more turtles around due to the heavy rains.
How to spot an Eastern box turtle:
- Box-like pattern on their shell or carapace
- Typically about 5 – 6 inches long
- Slightly webbed toes
- Yellow markings on dark feet and faces
Remember to leave the turtles undisturbed if they are not in any immediate danger. If you spot a turtle in the road or in a dangerous area, then carefully help move them in the direction they are headed.
“The turtles are out and about in our parks this time of year, seeking their mates, and suitable egg laying areas in which to dig and bury their nests,” said Ryan Butler, Principal Natural Resources Specialist. “It is important to realize that this is a busy time of year for many turtle species throughout the region. Whenever possible, turtles of all types should be left in their natural habitat, not taken home as pets, and only moved from their location if they are in immediate danger.”
