WASHINGTON — A library and day care were evacuated Tuesday after a car hit a gas meter in Bethesda.

According to Montgomery County Fire and EMS Spokesman Pete Piringer, the vehicle struck a gas meter at the Davis Library on Democracy Boulevard around 3 p.m.

Crews arrived and evacuated the building, including a library and day care. As the people were brought outside, temperatures were around 100 degrees. To help deal with the high heat, air-conditioned buses were brought to the area for people to board during the evacuation.

Around 4:40 p.m. Piringer posted an update on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying the high-pressure gas line to the damaged gas meter had been shut off. There is no word on what caused the car to crash into the gas meter or if the driver will face any charges.
