COLLEGE PARK, Md. — March Madness is finally underway. WUSA9 is highlighting the University of Maryland’s women’s basketball team as they compete in the big dance.
It’s spring break for the University of Maryland’s College Park campus so it’s quiet right now but the excitement is real for this women’s basketball team and their consistency.
"Terps, go Terps," one student said.
The University of Maryland Women’s basketball team is headed back to the big dance. This time they’re headed to California.
“I'm really proud of the University of Maryland's women's basketball team," one woman, named Ashley, said.
“I grew up here, so I've watched them play all their seasons," student Lexie Dupcak said.
People like Dupcak are excited to see the ladies compete again.
"Just them going back-to-back and watching their success is awesome, watching them do it again," Dupcak said.
The Maryland women’s basketball team earned the number 10 seed in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Terps have earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the last 14 seasons — except in 2020 during the pandemic.
“I think it's their time to shine and get women's basketball out there especially," student, Annabella Schafer said.
This is the Terps' 20th NCAA Tournament under Head Coach Brenda Frese in her 22 seasons in College Park. Frese has led the team to 11 Sweet Sixteen’s, three final fours, and a 2006 NCAA Championship.
Last year the ladies advanced to their 11th Elite Eight. Fans on campus are hoping they can go even further this year.
“We're going all the way, all the way, go Terps," UMD students, Olivia Kuehl, Annabelle Schafer, and Lexie Dupcak said.
The team plays Iowa State on Friday night in California. The winner will take on either Stanford or Norfolk State.
