NEW MARKET, Md. — Police are investigating multiple crashes in Frederick County that left two horses dead, and three people injured, including a Maryland State Trooper Friday morning.

According to the Maryland State Police, the crash happened shortly before 3 a.m. in the area of westbound Interstate 70, near mile marker 62.

Investigators say the trooper was responding to a report of multiple horses in the roadway. The animals appear to have escaped an enclosure and wandered onto the interstate. Both horses were killed when they were hit by multiple cars and a tractor-trailer.

While the trooper was stopped on I-70 to help a disabled car involved in the crash, another vehicle crashed into his patrol car, which officials say had its emergency lights on. The driver stopped and no charges are being filed at this time.

The trooper and two people injured in the earlier crash were taken to Frederick Health Hospital for help. There is no word on their current conditions are this time.

All lanes of I-70 were closed while crews looked into the crashes, which remain under investigation.
