Suspect in Md. Exxon clerk murder case arrested

A suspect has been arrested in connection with shooting and killing a gas station clerk in Hanover, Md., Anne Arundel County Police Department said.

HANOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- A suspect has been arrested in connection with shooting and killing a gas station clerk in Hanover, Md., Anne Arundel County Police Department said.

Police arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of 49-year-old Rajinder Kumar, who was shot on August 7 at 1 a.m. at 7898 Ridge Road in Hanover, Md.

The surveillance video showed a man enter the Exxon station confront Kumar and then shoot him before taking cash from behind the counter, police said.

On Friday Anne Arundel County Police Department Homicide Unit got a Grand Jury indictment for Robin Tyrone Smith Jr., 26, of Glen Burnie, Md. for the murder of Kumar, authorities said.

Smith Jr. is being charged with one count of first degree murder, second degree murder, and manslaughter. He is being charged with two counts of armed robbery, three counts of use of a firearm in a felony, and four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.

The suspect was taken into custody Friday without incident and is in jail at the Jennifer Road Detention Center on a no bail status, police said.

The motive for this murder has been determined as robbery, authorities said. The crime had been called a "brazen homicide" by Anne Arundel County Police spokesperson Lt. T.J. Smith.

"I am grateful for the partnerships with the FBI and our community that played vital roles in solving this murder," said Anne Arundel County Chief of Police Kevin Davis. "This cold-blooded, heartless killer had the audacity to roam freely while our community grieved. He committed this cowardly act and never thought twice about turning himself in. Today, he's in jail."
