It was determined that the student was able to get into the school through a side door when another student let him inside.

SPRINGDALE, Md. — An 18-year-old student is facing charges after bring a loaded gun onto school property in Prince George's County Thursday morning.

Officers with the Prince George's County Police Department were alerted around 8:20 a.m. by security personnel at Prince George's County Schools about a recovered gun from a student. This sparked an investigation at Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Springdale, where Ke'Shawn Reeves, of Lanham, was identified as the person of interest.

Police said that Reeves will be charged with handgun on person, dangerous weapon on school property, loaded handgun on person and additional charges.

In a letter to families of the students at the school, Lead Administrator Diedra Smalls-Screws stated that no students or staff members were harmed or actively threatened. It was determined that the student entered the building through a side door that was opened by another student, but was caught quickly and searched by security.

This is the second concerning letter that was sent to families of this specific high school this week. The other letter was regarding multiple altercations that happened on Tuesday. Officials say they are talking with the families of the students involved in those actions and are working to ensure the school's safety.

"While we understand that conflicts may arise, we must emphasize the importance of resolving disputes through constructive means," Smalls-Screws said in the letter. "We believe in fostering a positive and respectful school environment, and such behaviors will not be tolerated nor are they reflective of the values we aim to instill in our students."

No additional information was provided about either event, but school officials stated that the school's principal, Dr. Gorman Brown, has been reinstated in his role and will resume work at the school effective Jan. 3, 2024.
