'See something, say something' | Student at Walter Johnson High arrested for bringing loaded gun onto campus

Detectives say the student is being charged as an adult for possession of a firearm.

NORTH BETHESDA, Md. — Montgomery County Police have arrested and charged a teenage high school student for allegedly bringing a loaded gun to class on Monday. Investigators say the student is being charged as an adult for possession of a firearm.

Akram Nassir,17, of Bethesda is facing multiple gun related charges and is being held without bond.

At 1:30 p.m., Montgomery County Department of Police Community Engagement Officers were sent to Walter Johnson High School, located in the 6400 block of Rock Spring Drive. Officers arrested the student after finding him to be in possession of a gun.

Montgomery County say it was another student who first noticed the weapon.

"A student happened to be in one of the bathrooms and had seen another kid with something in his backpack," MCPD Captain Jordan Satinsky told WUSA9. "He thought it might have been a gun."

Police said the witness who didn't know the armed student and reported the incident to the school's security team, who was able to identify two possible suspects. A Montgomery County Police officer confronted Nassir, who according to investigators, had a loaded 9 millimeter handgun with him.

"The individual we captured yesterday actually had a loaded handgun on school property, which is terrifying for a whole of reasons obviously," Satinsky said. "So, I really do applaud the child for coming forward and having the courage to say something. Now I would encourage everyone to do that."

Nassir was taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he awaits a bond hearing. Police say he has been charged with underage possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded handgun and possession of a dangerous weapon on school property.

Police made this arrest as they also dealt with two separate false bomb threats at Montgomery Blair and Rockville High Schools that prompted lockdowns.

Another Montgomery County high school was also placed on lockdown earlier in the year after there was a report of a gun on campus. Police responded to a call about a student with a gun at Albert Einstein High School on Jan. 20.

Back in August, security staff at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, found a 10-grader who had part of a ghost gun inside a backpack. That weapon was outside on school grounds and not a complete operating firearm according to school administrators.
