SILVER SPRING, Md. — A Silver Spring man who walked into a Rockville City police station, baby in hand, back in February 2023 to turn himself in after murdering his wife now faces up to 40 years in prison.
Dennis Hinnant Jr., 30, was convicted of second-degree murder Friday after police found his wife, Taresha Pendarvis, 28, dead in a bathtub. She had been stabbed and strangled with a belt, according to police.
During that initial police station encounter, Hinnant Jr. told officers he needed to speak with a homicide detective. He then gave police his wife's address before officers responded to check on her and found her dead.
Hinnant Jr. told police during the interview that the couple had been arguing about their marriage before the murder. Pendarvis’ baby, meanwhile, was not harmed and was removed from Hinnant Jr.'s custody.
“We remain dedicated to aggressively prosecuting domestic violence in any form. The defendant was appropriately found guilty of murder, and we will be seeking the maximum penalty under the law,” State’s Attorney John McCarthy said in a prepared statement Friday.
Hinnant Jr.'s sentencing is scheduled for July 18.
